Bernard Gimbel and Horace Saks, two retailers New York's 34th street, joined forces in 1924 to open a store in upper Fifth Avenue that was to become home to a premium retailer of refined men's and women's fashion. When Saks died in 1926, Gimbel took the helm, traveling the world for inspiration for his clothing selection and the avantgarde designs for his stores, which he decorated in the Art Moderne of the 1925 Paris Exposition, setting Saks apart from the rest of the department stores of its time. In the 70s and 80s Saks expanded into Texas and the Midwest, and in the 1990s onto the West Coast. Today Saks carries the world's most sought-after brands, including high-class handbags and shoes from Dolce & Gabbana, Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik, Gucci and Prada. The unparalleled Saks shoe selection covers everything from oxfords, loafers, moccasins and sandals to women's flats, pumps and slingbacks by Alexander Wang, Armani, and The Row. From necklaces, bracelets, and brooches to men's and women's watches, Saks one-of-a-kind accessories assortment forms the perfect complement to its tasteful textiles.
